SHOWS ~ FIELD TRIPS TO CAPOEIRA CULTURAL CENTER ~ WORKSHOPS
The Show
Capoeira Malandragem, the performing group directed by Contra- Mestre Enxú (Dondi Marble), presents vibrant, full-costume shows for grades pre-K through 12 throughout Southeast Arizona. Through these shows, students experience a full spectrum of performing arts from 400 years of popular Brazilian culture--a compelling mix of dance, martial arts, live music, singing, and cultural history. All shows are interactive and age-appropriate. The show, which is tied together with a narrative story line, includes:
1.) Capoeira - an acrobatic, playful martial art featuring kicks, balances, leaps, and creative escapes in an intricate dovetailing of players’¹ movements, performed to the rhythms of the berimbau
2 Maculelê - a warrior¹s dance featuring the rhythmic interplay of wooden sticks
3.) Samba - the exuberant, fast-footed dance of Brazilian carnival, including the different styles of Rio samba (with spangled costumes and feathered headdresses); samba de roda (folkloric samba); and samba-reggae (street-style samba with elements of hip-hop)
4.)Dances of the Orixáis - ceremonial, vividly costumed dances representing the deities of the Afro-Brazilian religion, candomblê, and their individual energies and attributes
The live music features a rich array of Brazilian musical instruments, including the berimbau (a tall bow with gourd), the lead instrument of capoeira; the atabaque, a conga-like drum; the agogo, a double bell; the repinique, lead drum of samba; the large surdo drum; the pandeiro, or tambourine; and the cuica, famous for its high-pitched, birdlike sounds in samba rhythms. Capoeira Malandragem’s musicians skillfully bring out the character of each instrument during the show, showing students how distinctive sounds are produced.
