Mestra Suelly has been doing capoeira for twenty-plus years. Having first seen and taken one capoeira class in New York City, she began for good in 1983 in San Francisco, with Mestre Acordeon. In July of 2000 she received the title of Mestra in capoeira, being the first American woman to do so.
At the time Mestra Suelly began capoeira, she was also pursing a career in dance. She was a founding memeber of the nationally acclaimed
Joe Good Performance Group, with whom she performed and toured until 1997. Teaching many workshops with the JGPG, she had the opportunity to introduce many dancers to capoeira-influenced movements, as well as to capoeira.
